With long hot summers, Texans spend a lot of time in and around water — backyard pools, Lake Lewisville, water parks. Drowning is quick and often silent, and it remains a leading cause of accidental death for young children in Texas.
Layers of protection
No single measure is enough — safety comes from layers: constant, undistracted adult supervision (drowning happens in seconds, even with people nearby); barriers like four-sided pool fencing with self-latching gates; swim lessons; life jackets for weak swimmers and on boats; and learning CPR.
Open water is different
Lakes add drop-offs, murky water, currents, and boat traffic. Swim in designated areas, never swim alone, and keep children within arm's reach. Alcohol and swimming don't mix — impairment is a factor in many adult drownings.
What drowning looks like
Forget the movies — real drowning is usually silent. A person in trouble can't call out; they may bob vertically, gasp, or look like they're climbing an invisible ladder. If something looks wrong, act.
If someone is in trouble
Call 911, reach or throw something that floats — don't swim out unless you're trained. Start CPR if the person is unresponsive and not breathing; rescue breaths matter in drowning.
Swim lessons in Denton
The City of Denton and local YMCAs offer swim lessons for kids and adults. It's one of the highest-value safety investments a Texas family can make.
