Prediabetes means blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet in the diabetes range. It is very common — and most people who have it don't know, because there are usually no symptoms.
Who is more likely to have it
Risk is higher with excess weight, a family history of diabetes, being over 35, high blood pressure, and a history of gestational diabetes. Inactivity and diets heavy in sugary drinks and processed foods are also associated with higher risk. Many Denton adults check several of these boxes without realizing it.
Why catching it early matters
Prediabetes can progress to type 2 diabetes, but the earlier it's identified, the more options a person has to discuss with their provider. That's the real value of screening: it finds something invisible while there's still plenty of room to act on the information.
What screening may involve
Screening is a simple blood test — most often the A1C test, which reflects average blood sugar over the past few months, sometimes along with a fasting glucose test. A visit may involve the lab draw plus a review of risk factors and family history. Results come back with an explanation of what the numbers indicate in general terms.
