Every winter, Texas sees a wave of respiratory viruses — RSV, influenza, and the common cold often circulate at the same time. They can feel similar at first, which makes it hard to know what you're dealing with.
The usual suspects
Colds tend to stay in the nose and throat: sneezing, runny nose, mild sore throat. Flu usually hits harder and faster, with fever, body aches, and exhaustion. RSV causes cold-like symptoms in most adults but can be serious for infants, young children, and older adults, sometimes leading to breathing difficulty.
What to watch for
Most healthy adults recover from these viruses with rest and fluids. Seek care promptly for trouble breathing, chest pain, dehydration, a fever that won't come down, or symptoms that get worse instead of better after several days. For babies and older adults, be quicker to call.
Prevention basics
Handwashing, staying home when sick, and keeping up with recommended vaccines are the mainstays of winter virus prevention. Texas flu season typically peaks between December and February.
