Texas sunshine is a perk — and a risk. The state gets high UV levels most of the year, and cumulative sun exposure is the main driver of skin cancer, the most common cancer in the US.
How exposure adds up
Sunburns get the attention, but everyday exposure — driving, walking the dog, sideline Saturdays — accumulates over a lifetime. Tanning, whether from the sun or a bed, is skin damage, not a healthy glow.
Practical protection
Seek shade midday, wear broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen and reapply every two hours (more often when swimming or sweating), and add hats, sunglasses, and UPF clothing for long days outside. These habits matter for kids especially — much of lifetime UV exposure happens before age 18.
Know your skin
Watch for the ABCDEs of melanoma: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter over 6mm, and Evolving — any spot that changes. But most skin cancers aren't melanoma; any new, changing, or non-healing spot deserves a professional look.
When to see us
If you notice a changing mole, a sore that doesn't heal, or a new spot that looks different from your others, book a visit. Early skin cancers are highly treatable — catching them is the whole game. Annual physicals are a good time for a general skin review.
