Texas law requires children to have certain immunizations before attending school or childcare, with requirements stepping up at kindergarten and again at 7th grade. Schools check records at enrollment — missing shots can delay your child's start.
What's generally required
Texas requires vaccines against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (DTaP/Tdap), polio, measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), hepatitis A and B, and varicella (chickenpox), plus meningococcal vaccine before 7th grade. Exact doses and timing follow the state schedule, which your provider or school nurse can confirm.
Exemptions
Texas allows medical exemptions and conscientious-objection exemptions (via a state affidavit process). Requirements and forms change — check the Texas Department of State Health Services site for current rules.
Don't wait until August
Clinics get slammed with back-to-school physicals and shots in late summer. Getting records reviewed in spring or early summer means no first-day-of-school scramble — and time to space out any catch-up doses.
Records
Texas has ImmTrac2, the state immunization registry, which can help track down scattered records. Bring whatever records you have to your visit and we'll help sort out what's complete.
Where we fit in
We offer school-required vaccines and can review your child's record against Texas requirements, plus complete sports physicals in the same visit.
