Flash flooding is Texas's deadliest weather hazard. Intense storms can turn creeks, low-water crossings, and even familiar streets into raging water in minutes — and most flood deaths happen in vehicles.
Turn around, don't drown
Just six inches of moving water can knock an adult down; twelve inches can carry away a car. Never drive through flooded roads — you can't tell how deep the water is or whether the roadbed is gone underneath. It takes only seconds to lose control. "Turn around, don't drown" exists because this mistake kills Texans every year.
Before and during storms
Know whether you live in a flood-prone area, and never walk through floodwater — it can hide debris, downed power lines, and contamination. Keep kids away from storm drains and culverts. Move valuables and vehicles to higher ground when flash flood warnings are issued.
After the water recedes
Floodwater is contaminated — wear gloves and boots during cleanup, throw out food that touched floodwater, and watch for mold in the days after. Wells and water systems may need testing before use.
Health concerns
Standing water breeds mosquitoes within days, and cuts exposed to floodwater can get infected. See a provider for wounds that become increasingly red, swollen, or painful after flood exposure, and call 911 for any life-threatening emergency.
