Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, and while Denton is far from the coast, many North Texans have family on the coast, travel there, or host evacuees. Health preparation is part of every good hurricane plan.
Medications first
Keep at least a week's supply of essential medications, stored waterproof with a printed list of names and doses. If you use refrigerated medications like insulin, have a cooler and ice packs ready — and ask your provider or pharmacist about storage limits ahead of time.
Records that matter
Keep copies of prescriptions, vaccination records, insurance cards, and a list of medical conditions in a waterproof bag or secure phone folder. If you evacuate to a new area, providers there will need this information.
Go-bag health basics
Beyond the usual supplies: extra glasses or contacts, hearing aid batteries, infant formula and diapers if applicable, and basic first aid. Don't forget chargers for phones and any powered medical devices.
After the storm
Floodwater contamination, mold, injuries during cleanup, and interrupted care for chronic conditions are the main health risks after a hurricane. Generator safety matters here too — never run one indoors.
