Quick answer

Medicare open enrollment runs October 15 to December 7, 2026, and anything you change starts January 1, 2027. Before you switch, check three things: that your doctor is still in the plan's network, that your prescriptions are still covered, and what you will actually pay — premium plus deductible plus the out-of-pocket cap. Most people only check the drug list. The doctor check is the one that surprises people in January. If Evolve Health is your clinic, call us with your card handy and we will verify your coverage free, before you decide.

Open enrollment season brings a flood of mail, ads, and phone calls, most of it focused on premiums and drug prices. Those matter. But the change that stings most is the one nobody advertises: a plan drops your doctor from its network, and you find out at your first appointment of the new year. Networks, drug formularies, and cost caps all reset every January — which is exactly why this window exists. A half hour of checking in October or November protects a full year of care.

What open enrollment is, and the dates that matter

The Annual Enrollment Period is the one time each year when anyone with Medicare can change how they get their coverage: move from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan (or back), switch from one Advantage plan to another, or change Part D prescription drug plans. For 2026, the window runs from October 15 through December 7, and every change you make takes effect on January 1, 2027. If you do nothing, your current coverage generally rolls into 2027 — but "the same plan" is not necessarily the same deal, because its costs and network may have changed underneath you. Your plan was required to mail you an Annual Notice of Change by September 30 describing exactly what is different for 2027. That letter is the best starting point you have.

What's changing for 2027

Several national numbers move in 2027, and they are worth knowing before you compare plans (figures as reported by Medical Daily, September 23, 2026):

  • The Part D deductible cap rises from $615 to $700. That is the most you can be asked to pay toward covered prescriptions before your drug plan's cost-sharing structure fully kicks in.
  • The Part D out-of-pocket cap rises from $2,100 to $2,400. Once your spending on covered drugs reaches the cap, you pay nothing more for them that year — a real protection, set a little higher for 2027.
  • The Part D premium stabilization program ends. The federal demonstration that held down stand-alone drug plan premiums is wrapping up, so Part D premiums face upward pressure for 2027 — another reason to read your Annual Notice of Change rather than assume last year's price.
  • Medicare Advantage premiums stay low on average, with CMS projecting an average around $12 a month — but a low premium says nothing about whether your doctors are in the network, which is where the real cost can hide.

One more number explains why this guide exists: research cited this fall finds that roughly 7 in 10 Medicare beneficiaries never compare plans at all. Staying put is a choice too — it just deserves the same five checks as switching.

The 5-point checklist to run before December 7

  1. Is my doctor in-network? For Medicare Advantage, search the plan's 2027 provider directory for each of your doctors by name — not just the hospital or group — or call the clinic and ask. With Original Medicare there is no network, but Advantage networks are local and change every year.
  2. Are my prescriptions covered? Check every medication against the plan's 2027 drug list (formulary), including the tier it lands on. A drug that moves up a tier can cost more than the premium you saved.
  3. What will I actually pay? Add it up honestly: monthly premium, plus the deductible, plus your likely copays, up to the out-of-pocket maximum. A $0-premium plan with a high deductible can cost more over a year than a modest-premium plan that covers your routine care well.
  4. What do the extra benefits really cover? Dental, vision, hearing, and over-the-counter allowances are the headline extras on many Advantage plans. Read the fine print for dollar caps and network limits — a benefit you cannot use with your own dentist is worth less than it looks on the postcard.
  5. Did my current plan send an Annual Notice of Change? It should have arrived by September 30. It lists your plan's 2027 premium, cost, benefit, and network changes in plain terms. If you cannot find it, call the number on your member card and ask for it.

A household note: if your spouse is still working and on an employer plan, their fall enrollment runs on its own rules — our guide to using FSA money before it expires can help them finish the year strong.

How to check whether Evolve Health is in your plan

This part is simple, and it is free. Evolve Health accepts Medicare Part B, and your annual physical is $0 with acceptable insurance. If you are weighing a Medicare Advantage plan, we are glad to confirm — before you commit — whether your care here is covered under it: coverage is verified individually, from your insurance card, a photo ID, and your date of birth, and we will tell you the answer before your visit, not after. To be straightforward about our role: we are a clinic, not insurance agents. We cannot enroll you in a plan or recommend which one to pick — but we can confirm whether your care with us is covered, and that confirmation is often the missing fact in the decision.

Red flags and common mistakes

  • Switching for a gift card or a giveaway. A small perk is not worth a year of the wrong network. Judge the plan on your doctors, your drugs, and your total costs.
  • Assuming your doctor stayed in-network. This is the most common January surprise we see. Networks are rebuilt annually — verify, even if "nothing changed" last year.
  • Comparing premiums only. The premium is the smallest part of most people's real cost. Run the full math in step 3 of the checklist.
  • Waiting until December. The December 7 deadline is firm for most people, and phone lines get busy at the end. Checking in October or November leaves time to get answers — including from us.

Frequently asked questions

When is Medicare open enrollment in 2026?

Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 to December 7, 2026. Any change you make during that window — switching plans, joining a Medicare Advantage plan, or changing drug coverage — takes effect on January 1, 2027. If you do nothing, your current coverage generally renews for 2027, even if its costs or network have changed.

Can I keep my doctor if I switch to Medicare Advantage?

Only if your doctor is in that plan's network. Medicare Advantage plans work with local provider networks, and those networks change — a doctor who was in-network this year may not be next year. Before you switch, confirm each of your doctors by name in the new plan's 2027 network, or call the clinic and ask us to verify your coverage before you decide.

What happens if I miss the December 7 deadline?

In most cases you keep your current coverage for 2027, and your next regular chance to change is the following fall's enrollment period. There are exceptions: if you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan, a separate window from January 1 to March 31 lets you switch Advantage plans or return to Original Medicare, and life events like moving or losing coverage can open a Special Enrollment Period. If a deadline is close, act before it passes rather than counting on an exception.

Does Evolve Health accept Medicare?

Yes — Evolve Health accepts Medicare Part B, and your annual physical is $0 with acceptable insurance. If you are considering a Medicare Advantage plan, bring us the plan details: we verify coverage from your insurance card, photo ID, and date of birth, and we will tell you before your visit whether your care here is covered.

How do I check if my plan covers my visit at Evolve Health?

Call us at (940) 257-2002 with your insurance card handy. Using the card, your photo ID, and your date of birth, we confirm your coverage before your visit — no charge and no obligation. That check works whether you stay in your current plan or are comparing a new one for 2027.

What's the difference between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage for choosing my doctor?

With Original Medicare (Part A and Part B), you can see any doctor or hospital in the country that accepts Medicare — there is no network list to check. Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans bundle your coverage through a private insurer with a local network: your costs are lowest with in-network doctors, and some plans require referrals for specialists. Advantage plans may add extras like dental or vision benefits, so the trade-off is flexibility of doctors versus bundled extras — checking the network is how you protect the doctor relationship you already have.
