Scorpions in Texas

Scorpions are common in Texas, especially in rocky areas. Here's how to keep them out of your home and what to do about stings.

Several scorpion species live in Texas, most commonly the striped bark scorpion. They're nocturnal, hide under rocks and bark by day, and occasionally wander into homes — especially in newer developments built on former scorpion habitat.

Reducing encounters

Seal cracks around doors and windows, keep firewood and debris away from the house, and shake out shoes and clothing left on the floor. A blacklight at night makes scorpions glow — a fun (if startling) way to survey your yard.

About stings

Texas scorpion stings are painful — often described as an intense burning — but are rarely dangerous for healthy adults. Pain, numbness, or tingling at the site usually fades within hours. Clean the area and watch it.

When to seek care

See a provider for stings in young children or older adults, stings with spreading numbness, or any sting that isn't improving. Call 911 for trouble breathing, muscle twitching, drooling, or other whole-body symptoms — uncommon with Texas species, but always worth taking seriously in young children.

The one to know

Arizona bark scorpions (with medically significant venom) are found in far West Texas. Elsewhere in the state, including North Texas, stings are painful but not typically dangerous.
