Sore throats are one of the most common reasons people visit a clinic — and one of the most common questions is whether it's strep. Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the throat and tonsils, and it looks a little different from an ordinary cold.
How strep typically presents
Strep throat often starts suddenly with a painful sore throat, fever, and swollen glands in the neck. Red or swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches, are common. One useful clue: colds usually come with a runny nose and cough, while strep often does not. School-age children get strep most often, and it spreads easily in classrooms and dorms across Denton.
What testing may involve
Because symptoms alone can't confirm strep, a clinic visit may involve a rapid strep test — a quick swab of the throat with results in minutes — and sometimes a follow-up throat culture for confirmation. A provider will also do an exam to rule out other causes of the sore throat.
Why testing matters
Strep is bacterial, which is what distinguishes it from the many sore throats caused by viruses. Identifying the cause helps the provider explain the right next steps, including how long to stay home from school or work to avoid spreading it.
