Texas has ticks nearly year-round thanks to mild winters. They're common in tall grass, brush, wooded trails, and anywhere deer and other wildlife roam — including Denton-area parks and greenbelts.
Texas tick illnesses
The lone star tick — named for the white dot on the female's back — is widespread here and can spread ehrlichiosis and tularemia. American dog ticks and black-legged ticks are also present. Lyme disease is uncommon in Texas compared to the Northeast, but other tick-borne illnesses are a real local concern.
Prevention
Use EPA-registered insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants tucked into socks in tick habitat, and stick to the center of trails. After time outdoors, do a full-body tick check — behind ears, along the hairline, underarms, waistband, and behind knees. Tumble clothes in a hot dryer to kill missed ticks.
If you find one attached
Remove it with fine-tipped tweezers, grasping as close to the skin as possible and pulling straight up. Clean the area and note the date. Save the tick in a bag if you can — identification helps if symptoms develop later.
When to see us
See a provider if you develop a rash, fever, headache, or muscle aches in the weeks after a bite, or if you can't remove the whole tick. Bring the tick (or a photo of it) if you have it.
