Texas student-athletes must have a pre-participation physical exam (PPE) before trying out or practicing — and it has to be repeated every year. The UIL (University Interscholastic League) sets the standard form every Texas school uses.
What the exam covers
The UIL form includes a health history questionnaire and a physical exam focused on the heart, lungs, joints, and overall fitness for sport. The history section matters most — heart-related questions about fainting, chest pain, or family history of sudden cardiac events are there to catch rare but serious risks.
Timing
Physicals are typically good for one school year. Many families schedule in May or June to beat the August rush — and a single visit can often cover both the sports physical and an annual well check.
What to bring
Bring the UIL pre-participation form (from your school's athletic office or website) with the history section filled out and signed by a parent. Bring glasses or contacts, and a list of any medications.
More than a checkbox
A good sports physical is a chance to talk about training load, nutrition, sleep, previous injuries, and mental health — things that affect performance and safety all season.
Cost
Our sports physicals are affordably priced for self-pay families, and most insurance plans cover annual well visits that can include the PPE.
